With half term fast approaching most of us are still struggling to think of ways to keep the kids occupied that doesn’t involve them sitting in the house and playing computer games.
Instead for many of us the ideal way to spend the time off is to get out and about as a family, and for some a last minute holiday abroad would be the ultimate in getting away from it all and relaxing.
However, here in the UK we are very lucky to have some wonderful cities and attractions right on our doorstep, if an overseas getaway is stretching the bank that little bit too much then here are some great places to visit right here in Britain that could be a more affordable option and just as fun.
Edinburgh

Edinburgh is one of the most popular cities in the UK to visit on a city break, although can often be more associated with romantic weekend breaks for couples than a great place to visit with the family. For those who have visited the Scottish capital they will know that there are great things to do for the whole family, for those who love history a trip to the legendary Edinburgh castle and Edinburgh Dungeons has to be on the cards. Edinburgh Zoo is a great day out when visiting Edinburgh with children, home to the famous giant pandas that have recently been flown over from China as well as the famous ‘Penguin Parade’ when the resident Penguins walk through the zoo, much to the visitor’s pleasure!
Cornwall

From one end of the country to the other, Cornwall is also a great place to go for a family break. With some of the most impressive scenery in the UK, Cornwall is great for families who enjoy being in the great outdoors and like to grab their waterproofs and walking boots and get exploring. Of course Cornwall comes into its own in the summer months but don’t be put off by the chilly February temperatures as there is still plenty to do.
The Eden Project is a must see when in this part of the country, described by some as ‘the eighth wonder of the world’ this global garden housed in giant biomes is the size of 30 football pitches and really has to be seen to be believed.
Lake District
Again for the lovers of our beautiful natural landscapes, the Lake District is another area of the UK that is great for family breaks. There is little chance of the children getting bored here either and for the sports lovers out there, there are endless trails to climb, white water rafting and canoeing activities to take part in. If the weather is a bit chilly, there are many indoor activity centres such as Lakeland Climbing centre in Kendal to burn off the energy. For the book worms you can visit the home of much loved children’s author Beatrix Potter near Sawrey in Ambleside. Here you can see firsthand where characters such as Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck and Tom Kitten came to life all those years ago.
Stratford Upon Avon
If your children are interested in literature or indeed Tudor history then a trip to Stratford upon Avon could be a great way to spend the half term. Home of course to legendary playwright William Shakespeare, visitors to the area can see the house where he was born and grew up and Anne Hathaway’s cottage, the childhood home of Shakespeare’s wife. Both residences provide visitors with a great insight into how they would have lived back in the 1500’s and 1600’s and is a wonderful place to visit for children who have an interest in Tudor history or any budding writers or actors. After experiencing the residences of Shakespeare and his family members you can continue your tour of the area with a visit to the Royal Shakespeare Company and Theatres to enjoy one of the productions performed all year round.
