Meal Planning Monday - May 2010 Week One

It has been a month of weekly shopping and so it will be interesting to see how we have gone in great detail regarding spending.   That is possibly a bit out of the scope for this blog and more something for my spreadsheet fetish late at night sometime!   However, here we do have the results for April:

So it shows with the colours that overall we made it £23.43 under budget.  I am not fully sure if that is correct as some of our small mid week buys did not make it, so I expect in reality we came just over - we shall try better (record keeping that is) this month.   Out of the £50 a week budget we hit that for weeks 2 and 4, with week 4 being hardly anything.   The weekly budget it just a guide, the monthly one is the one to aim for and it is quite clear that you will have expensive and cheap weeks as bulk buys continue over the weeks but hit hard when they need replacing.

On with May and this was due to be a big expensive week.  We did indeed buy a lot of stuff it seemed, we needed a trolly and not a basket, and yet it came to just £41.52.  In the shop included a new jar of coffee, a big bag of frozen fish, lots of new cooking and spreading marg, plus a large bit of meet for what will be our roast for the month.

So, for this month we have:

  • Monday - Brocolli Pesto
  • Tuesday - Vegetable fried rice
  • Wednesday - Bolognese
  • Thursday - Fish and potato pie
  • Friday - Roast Chicken
  • Saturday - Chicken Curry
  • Sunday - guests

Now, maybe the cheapness of this week was due to us not fully finishing it.  We have guests on Sunday and so we are still pondering about food for the day as one of the guests as a "special diet" which first means we need to understand just what can and cannot be eaten and then plan something to wow everyone.  I expect then that this will bump it all up.   Plus.....  we have guests now on Saturday too who we know will not eat curry, so that will change.  At first glance I think we can do something nice with the rest of the chicken on Friday but....  I bought a reduce peice of beef instead of chicken!   So, it this week isn't going quite to plan, tonight we are having the beef which means Friday we will have the brocolli.    We will have a meal left over possibly for next week, but we need to find two "wow" meals for the weekend.   This weekend then we shall be mostly cooking and "wowing".
